Description

One of the most visionary and genre-defying surf soundtracks ever recorded.

Created for George Greenough’s groundbreaking late-1960s surf film Innermost Limits of Pure Fun, this soundtrack pushed surf music far beyond traditional reverb instrumentals into psychedelic, cinematic, and deeply immersive territory. Greenough’s revolutionary underwater filmmaking techniques changed surf cinematography forever, capturing the feeling of riding waves in ways audiences had never experienced before.

To match that energy, Greenough chose The Dragons, one of the most adventurous groups to emerge from the original surf instrumental era. Best known for the legendary “Troll,” the band had already begun stretching beyond the standard surf formula by blending fuzzy guitars, jazz-influenced percussion, keyboards, bass harmonica, and dense atmospheric arrangements into something far more expansive.

By the time these sessions were recorded in 1969, The Dragons were fully exploring improvisation, psychedelic textures, and experimental instrumental music while still remaining rooted in surf culture. The result feels hypnotic, oceanic, and completely transportive. Tracks like “Crystal Shingles,” “Snake Charmer,” “Inner Space,” and “Coming Of The Dawn” drift between surf, psych, jazz, and soundtrack music with a freedom rarely heard in the genre.

The influence of California counterculture runs throughout the entire project. Some of the non-surfers inspired by Greenough’s work during this era would later collaborate on his follow-up film Echoes. They were better known to the world as Pink Floyd.

This deluxe Sundazed edition is pressed on vibrant orange vinyl and includes a four-page insert with rare photos and extensive liner notes from Denny Aaberg and Dennis Dragon. Cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.
