Description

Surf, cycles, and super guitar crunch.

The kids of 1958 loved Link Wray, and it did not take long for the music industry to realize they had something dangerous on their hands. Following the explosive success of “Rumble,” Link and his band entered the studio to record what was intended to be a full follow-up album for Cadence Records. Instead, the label panicked.

The distorted guitars, hot rod attitude, and rebellious energy running through these recordings were considered too aggressive for the era, leading the sessions to remain unreleased for nearly fifty years. Listening now, it is easy to understand why. White Lightning sounds raw, loud, and genuinely threatening in ways that would later influence surf, garage, punk, and heavy rock for decades to come.

Tracks like “Drag Race,” “Comanche,” “Raw-Hide,” and “Walking With Link” hit with pure teenage energy, while the blown-out guitar tones still feel remarkably ahead of their time. There is swagger everywhere on this record. Motorcycles, drag strips, dance halls, and juvenile delinquent cool all wrapped into one beautifully dirty package.

Recovered from the vault and finally given proper release decades later, this album stands as one of the clearest snapshots of Link Wray’s groundbreaking influence on modern guitar music.

Why We Carry It

Because Link Wray helped invent the sound of dangerous guitar music. This is the raw blueprint for surf, garage, punk, and hard rock long before those genres fully existed. Loud, nasty, and essential.

For Fans Of

The Ventures, Duane Eddy, The Sonics, garage rock, hot rod instrumentals, proto-punk guitar chaos.
