Booker T. & The M.G.’s – Green Onions

Originally released in 1962, Green Onions remains one of the most influential instrumental albums ever recorded. Built around Booker T. Jones’s instantly recognizable Hammond organ and the tight groove of The M.G.’s, the album helped define the sound of Memphis soul and introduced one of the most iconic instrumental recordings in music history.

While the title track became a worldwide hit, the album offers much more than a single classic. Across twelve tracks, Booker T. & The M.G.’s demonstrate the chemistry, restraint, and musicianship that would make them one of the defining bands of the Stax Records era.

Decades after its release, Green Onions continues to influence soul, rock, surf, blues, funk, and instrumental music, proving that a great groove never goes out of style.

The Ventures, The Meters, Duane Eddy, Otis Redding, Stax Records, instrumental soul, rhythm & blues

This is actually one of those records I’d quietly put near the top of the “everyone should own one copy” pile. Same category as Link Wray & The Raymen, Sleepwalk, Surfer Girl, and The Enchanted Sea—records that end up influencing half the music we sell.
